Camping On Sanibel Island

Thousands of people travel to Sanibel Island with camping gear or recreational vehicles in tow. Although Florida has been a camping Mecca, not many people have considere camping on Sanibel Island.

Records show that the only active site for camping on Sanibel is the Periwinkle Trailer Park and Campground.

It's a commercial campground located near a large island attraction and only half a mile to the Gulf beaches.

This campground is named “Periwinkle” because it's located at the Periwinkle Way of this barrier island off the southwest coast of Florida.

Camping at Periwinkle Trailer Park can be very relaxing. There are a number of sites available at the campground, which include full hookups recreational vehicle or RV sites, tent sites, and sites for motor homes.

The campsite also offers campers, hot showers, laundry facilities, picnic tables, and a pavilion.

The nice thing about this state park for camping in Sanibel Island, is the ten minute walk to the white sandy beaches, which are littered with many different varieties of seashells.

Aside from the Periwinkle Trailer Park and Campground’s sites offer the necessary amenities for private and public functions, golf, shops, dining, laundry, LP gas, and much more.

The accommodation available at the Park and Campground are also equipped with electric, water and sewer hookups for your recreational vehicles. They make sure you're provided with everything you need, if you wish to visit and explore the island’s many attractions.

Another interesting factor about staying at the Periwinkle Trailer Park and Campground, is the fact that there are a wide variety of different species of exotic and native birds.. The most common being toucans and macaws, as well as the brown and ringtail lemurs.

For those who wish to stay close to the campsite, The Lazy Flamingo restaurant is only a short walk. The restaurants philosophy is to serve only fresh seafood and provide a festive and local type atmosphere in a nautical decorated establishment.

Some of the dishes available on the menu are steamed shrimps, fried shrimp, conch fritters and buffalo wing, for the non seafood lovers. Other great menu items include, ice cold oysters and clams, smoked fish, fried grouper sandwich, grilled chicken breast, burgers, ribs, steak etc.

The restaurant also offers other specialty items which are considered "signature" items, such as "The Pot", Your Catch, Flamingo Garlic Bread, Dead Parrot Wings, and Teri-Hot Wings. Certainly all of these menu items are enough to satisfy even the most difficult taste buds.

It's important to note that the best time of the year to consider camping on Sanibel Island is from late fall to early spring.

Why? Because the days are sparkling and clear, and the nights are cool and relatively mosquito free.

Camping in Sanibel Island, especially along the beach, in the month of January can be the ultimate family vacation. So consider camping on Sanibel at the Periwinkle Trailer Park and Campground, to explore and enjoy Sanibel.
